The use of Pronouns
At UKAD, we understand that using the correct pronouns is fundamental to human dignity and helps create an inclusive environment where everyone feels acknowledged and respected. Through our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working Party, we aim to raise awareness about the impact of misgendering and the importance of inclusive language both at work and in social environments.
Using correct pronouns and sharing our own at work is crucial for several reasons:
- Respect and Inclusion: Using someone’s correct pronouns shows respect for their identity and provides an inclusive environment. It acknowledges and validates gender identity, making everyone feel seen and respected.
- Mental Health: Correct pronoun usage can positively impact mental health. Studies have shown that using the correct pronouns and names reduces symptoms of depression and lowers the risk of suicide among transgender and non-binary individuals. It helps to affirm identity and reduce feelings of dysphoria.
- Promoting Diversity: By normalising the practice for everyone of sharing and respecting pronouns, we promote diversity and inclusion, helping to create a more accepting workplace.
- Encourages Allyship: When we all share our pronouns, it shows solidarity with gender-diverse and non-binary colleagues. It normalises the practice and reduces the burden on those who might otherwise have to repeatedly explain their pronouns.
- Fosters Open Communication: It opens up conversations about gender and identity, making it easier for people to express themselves and their needs. This can lead to a more understanding and inclusive workplace.
What do we do?
At UKAD we encourage all colleagues to share their pronouns on their email signature for the reasons above. However, this is optional and we do not penalise or judge anyone who does not wish to do so.
We also encourage open and respectful communications within and across teams. It may be beneficial to share your pronouns as a matter of course when speaking at Team Talk or in an environment where people may not know you well. In this way we can help make it a safe space for everyone to be their authentic selves.
